Merit Award, Molly Morpeth Canady Trust Art Award 2010, Whakatane (Judges comment: “This work is an original interpretation of New Zealand landscape/nature painting and its impact relies on the fact that it takes the viewer into a close-up encounter with the subject rather than relying on a more traditional, distanced view. There is an effective balance between the innovative painting technique the artist has used in his rendering of the quality and texture of the flax leaves and the carefully constructed composition of curves and diagonals. The artist has also heightened the contrast between the areas of light and dark by reducing the mid tones thus achieving a more striking and dramatic result.)
